About
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening measure that relates weight to height, calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. It was devised by the Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 19th century and remains the most widely used population-level indicator of underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity.
The World Health Organization sets the standard cut-offs — a BMI of 18.5–24.9 is considered healthy — but these thresholds were derived from European populations. Because people of Asian descent tend to carry more body fat at a given BMI and face elevated cardiometabolic risk earlier, the Asia-Pacific guidelines lower the overweight threshold to 23 and the obesity threshold to 25. This calculator reports both so you can compare.
BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat and does not account for fat distribution, so it is a screening tool rather than a diagnosis. Athletes and very muscular individuals may read as overweight despite low body fat. For a fuller picture, pair BMI with waist circumference or a body-fat estimate.
