돌잔치 First Birthday Planning

Calculate the exact dol date, lunar timing, and venue budget for your baby's first birthday

Cultural & Traditional 2 min read

Who this is for: Korean parents preparing their baby's first birthday celebration who need to confirm the exact dol date in both solar and lunar calendars, choose traditional ritual items, and budget for the venue deposit.

Steps

  1. Find the Exact Dol Date

  2. Check Lunar Calendar for Auspicious Party Date

  3. Calculate the Venue Deposit

돌잔치 (Doljanchi), the Korean first-birthday celebration, is one of the most significant milestones in Korean family life. Historically, reaching a first birthday was an achievement worth celebrating publicly because infant mortality was high. Today it remains a major party with the iconic doljabi (돌잡이) ritual, where the baby's choice of objects from a spread is thought to predict their future. Getting the date right — in both calendars — is the first step.

Step 1 — Find the Exact Dol Date

Age

The dol (돌) falls exactly 365 days after birth — or 366 days if a leap day falls within that year. Crucially, the dol is counted from the actual birth date, not from a Korean counting age calculation. Enter your baby's birth date in the age calculator to confirm the exact anniversary in both international and Korean counting. Some families also note the baekil (백일) — the 100-day celebration — which you can compute the same way.

Important nuance: in Korean tradition the first birthday is expressed as "돌," but older documents or grandparents may say the child is 두 살 (two years old) by Korean counting age on their first birthday. This creates no conflict — just two different frameworks operating simultaneously.

Step 2 — Check the Lunar Date for the Party

Lunar Solar

Many families schedule the doljanchi not on the exact solar birthday but on a nearby auspicious date. Consulting a lunar almanac (달력, 만세력) is traditional. The most commonly avoided dates include: - The first and last lunar months (설날 and 그믐 periods) - Soneobneun-nal — days when the mischievous directional spirit is present (dates not ending in 9 or 0 of the lunar month)

Convert the solar birth anniversary and nearby weekend dates to their lunar equivalents to check which ones fall in favorable lunar territory. If grandparents are strongly traditional, present two or three options with their lunar dates so the elders can weigh in.

Step 3 — Budget the Venue Deposit

Percentage

Doljanchi venues typically require a 30–50% deposit to hold the date. Once you have a price quote from the venue, use the percentage calculator to confirm the deposit amount before wiring funds. Venue pricing in Seoul ranges from roughly 500,000 KRW for a small family gathering at a restaurant to 3,000,000 KRW or more for a dedicated doljanchi hall with photography, catering, and a custom dol set.

Calculate: - Deposit amount = (Total package price) × (Deposit percentage ÷ 100) - Remaining balance due on event day

Doljabi Object Meanings

The doljabi spread traditionally includes objects that predict the baby's path:

Object Predicted Future
실 (Thread) Long life
돈 (Money) Wealth
연필 (Pencil) Academic success
마이크 (Microphone) Performing arts fame
청진기 (Stethoscope) Medical career
법봉 (Judge's gavel) Legal career
쌀 (Rice) Never go hungry

Photography and Timeline

Doljanchi photography packages are usually split into two sessions: studio (indoor portraits a few days before) and event photography on the day itself. Book the studio session at least one month in advance — popular studios near major holidays book out quickly. The event itself typically runs 2–3 hours: greeting guests, the doljabi ritual, cake cutting, and a meal.
