Running Pace Calculator

Calculate your running pace, speed, and predicted split times for any distance.

Overview

Running pace is time divided by distance, conventionally expressed as minutes and seconds per kilometre or per mile. Finish time is the inverse relationship: pace multiplied by distance. A 5:00 per kilometre pace produces a 42:11 ten-kilometre time and a 3:30:59 marathon, which is why small pace changes compound sharply over distance.

About

Even pacing is the strategy that produces the fastest results at distances beyond a few kilometres. Most world records in the marathon have been set on near-even or slightly negative splits, where the second half is run marginally faster than the first, because early overspending depletes glycogen and raises lactate faster than the later saving recovers.

Split tables translate a target finish into checkpoint times, and course profile, heat and altitude all shift the achievable pace: hot conditions typically cost several percent, and net elevation gain more still.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my running pace?
Running pace is the time it takes to cover a specific distance, usually expressed as minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile. Divide your total time by the distance. For example, running 5 km in 25 minutes gives a pace of 5:00 min/km or about 8:03 min/mile.
What is a good running pace for beginners?
A typical beginner pace is 6:00–7:00 min/km (9:40–11:16 min/mile). For a first 5K, finishing in 30–35 minutes (6:00–7:00 min/km) is a reasonable goal. Improvement comes naturally with consistent training; most runners can reduce their pace by 30–60 seconds per km within a few months.
What pace do I need for common race distances?
To break common time goals: sub-25 min 5K requires 5:00 min/km, sub-2 hour half-marathon requires 5:41 min/km, sub-4 hour marathon requires 5:41 min/km, and sub-3 hour marathon requires 4:16 min/km. Training should include both easy runs and tempo work at target pace.
