Discount Calculator

Calculate the sale price and how much you save with any discount.

Overview

A discounted price is the original price multiplied by one minus the discount rate, so 30 percent off a 200 unit item leaves 200 × 0.7, or 140, and the saving is the 60 unit difference. The arithmetic is straightforward for a single reduction, and a percentage saving can be read directly off the multiplier. The errors arise only when reductions are combined with one another or reversed.

About

Successive discounts do not add. Thirty percent off followed by a further twenty percent off leaves 0.7 × 0.8 = 0.56 of the original price, a 44 percent reduction rather than 50. The order of application does not matter, since multiplication commutes, but the assumption of addition consistently overstates the saving.

Reversing a discount requires division rather than subtraction: a price reduced by 20 percent must rise by 25 percent to return to its original level, because the increase applies to the smaller base. The same asymmetry explains why a 50 percent loss requires a 100 percent gain to recover.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the final price after a discount?
Multiply the original price by (1 – discount percentage/100). For a 30% discount on $80: $80 × (1 – 0.30) = $80 × 0.70 = $56. Alternatively, calculate the discount amount ($80 × 0.30 = $24) and subtract it from the original price.
How do stacked or double discounts work?
Stacked discounts are applied sequentially, not added together. A 20% off coupon on top of a 30% sale means: first apply 30% ($100 → $70), then apply 20% to the result ($70 → $56). This is not the same as a single 50% discount ($100 → $50).
How do I calculate the original price from a discounted price?
Divide the sale price by (1 – discount percentage/100). If an item costs $56 after a 30% discount, the original price was $56 / (1 – 0.30) = $56 / 0.70 = $80.
