Doubling and Halving: The Fastest Path to Any Multiplication

Multiplying by 2, 4, 8, or 16 is trivially fast because each step is just a doubling. Multiplying by 5 is equally fast because 5 = 10 ÷ 2: move the decimal, then halve.

  • ×5: Multiply by 10, then halve. 38 × 5 = 380 ÷ 2 = 190
  • ×25: Multiply by 100, then divide by 4. 44 × 25 = 4,400 ÷ 4 = 1,100
  • ×15: Multiply by 10, then add half again. 26 × 15 = 260 + 130 = 390
  • ×9: Multiply by 10, then subtract the original. 47 × 9 = 470 − 47 = 423

The doubling chain also helps: 17 × 8 = 17 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 34 × 2 × 2 = 68 × 2 = 136.

Anchoring: Pick a Round Number and Adjust

Anchoring turns ugly numbers into clean ones. Instead of multiplying 48 × 7 directly, treat 48 as 50 − 2:

  • 50 × 7 = 350
  • 2 × 7 = 14
  • 48 × 7 = 350 − 14 = 336

The same technique works for prices. A $197 item at 8% tax: treat it as $200 × 8% = $16, then subtract $3 × 8% = $0.24, giving roughly $15.76.

The Number-Flip Rule for Percentages

Multiplication is commutative, which means X% of Y = Y% of X. Choose whichever version is easier:

Two patterns give instant squares without long multiplication.

Near 100: (100 − n)² = 10,000 − 200n + n² - 97² = 10,000 − 600 + 9 = 9,409 - 96² = 10,000 − 800 + 16 = 9,216

Near 50: (50 ± n)² = 2,500 ± 100n + n² - 53² = 2,500 + 300 + 9 = 2,809 - 47² = 2,500 − 300 + 9 = 2,209

The Rule of 72 for Doubling Time

For compound growth, divide 72 by the annual rate to approximate the number of years to double your money. At 6% annual return, your investment doubles in about 72 ÷ 6 = 12 years. At 9%, it takes roughly 8 years. This is one of the most useful mental shortcuts in personal finance.

Estimation with Rounding Chains

For multi-step calculations, round aggressively at each step, then refine only if necessary.

Estimating a 15% service charge on a bill of $83.60: 1. Round to $84 2. 10% = $8.40 3. 5% = $4.20 4. 15% ≈ $12.60

The true figure is 15% × $83.60 = $12.54 — a difference of six cents, which is irrelevant for splitting a bill.

Practice Makes Patterns Automatic

Mental math shortcuts feel slow at first because every new technique requires conscious attention. Fluency comes from repetition.
