About
Tatami dimensions are regional, so a mat count does not fix an area. Kyōma mats used in the Kyoto region measure 1.824 m², chūkyōma in Nagoya 1.656 m², edoma in Tokyo 1.549 m², and danchima in postwar public housing just 1.445 m². A six-mat room therefore ranges from about 8.7 to 10.9 m² depending on the standard applied.
The variation is historical: Kyoto sized rooms to the mat, laying the floor first and building around it, while Edo sized the pillars first and cut mats to fit the remaining space, producing progressively smaller standards as urban land grew expensive.
