What Percentage

Overview

Expressing one quantity as a share of another divides the part by the whole and scales the ratio to a hundred: % = part ÷ whole × 100. A score of 25 out of 200 is 25 ÷ 200 × 100, or 12.5 percent. This is the form that answers questions about composition rather than magnitude or movement — market share, exam marks, the proportion of a budget consumed, the fraction of respondents choosing an option. Confusion with percentage change is common because both produce a percentage from two numbers, but the denominators differ: here the whole is a total containing the part, while in percentage change the denominator is an earlier value of the same quantity. Results above a hundred percent are valid whenever the part legitimately exceeds the reference whole, as with sales against a target.

Expressing One Quantity as a Share of Another

The third and last of the elementary percentage forms answers questions of composition:

A score of 25 out of 200 is $25/200 \times 100 = 12.5\%$. Both quantities must be in the same units, and the whole must be the total that actually contains the part.

Distinguishing the Three Forms

The three percentage operations share notation but differ in what occupies the denominator.

Selecting the wrong denominator is the single most common error in percentage arithmetic, and it is why a stated percentage should always name its base.

Shares Above One Hundred Percent

Nothing prevents the part from exceeding the reference whole. Sales of 130 against a target of 100 is 130% of target, and a department consuming 110% of its budget has overspent by a tenth. The form is only invalid when the "whole" is a genuine total of which the part is a subset, in which case a result above 100% signals a counting error.

Derivation & History

The operation is simply a ratio rescaled to a fixed denominator, chosen as 100 because base-ten notation makes hundredths easy to read and compare. The same rescaling with a denominator of 1,000 yields per mille (‰), used for mortality rates and mixing ratios, and with 10,000 yields basis points, the standard unit for interest-rate and fee differentials in finance. All three are the same normalisation applied at different magnitudes: 25 basis points, 2.5‰ and 0.25% describe one quantity.

Worked Examples

Exam score as a percentage

  1. Divide the marks earned by the marks available: 43 ÷ 60 = 0.71667
  2. Scale to a percentage: 0.71667 × 100 = 71.67

Market share

  1. 2,400 ÷ 16,000 = 0.15

Result: 15% market share

Edge Cases & Limitations

Whole equals zero: The share is undefined; no percentage exists relative to an empty total.

Mismatched units: Dividing 500 grams by 2 kilograms without conversion returns 25,000%. Both quantities must share a unit.

Overlapping parts: Shares of a total only sum to 100% when the parts are mutually exclusive. Survey questions permitting multiple answers produce columns that legitimately exceed 100%.

Rounding a set of shares: Individually rounded shares often sum to 99.9% or 100.1%. Published tables either note the discrepancy or apply largest-remainder rounding so the column totals exactly.

Real-World Applications

Examination marking, market-share reporting, budget-utilisation tracking and survey result tabulation all rest on this form. Manufacturing yield is the count of good units as a share of units started, and clinical prevalence is the count of cases as a share of the population studied.
