Overview
The US Navy circumference method estimates body fat from height and girth measurements: neck and waist for men, with hip added for women. About
Accuracy is moderate — typically within three to four percentage points of a laboratory measurement for people of average build — and degrades at the extremes. Very muscular individuals carry abdominal wall thickness that the waist measurement attributes to fat, while the method underestimates in people with low muscle mass at a given weight.
The BMI-derived alternative uses the Deurenberg equation to estimate fat from body mass index, age and sex. It requires no tape at all but inherits every limitation of BMI, since two people of identical height and weight receive the same estimate regardless of how their mass is distributed. Measurement technique dominates: the waist is taken at the navel, the neck below the larynx, and the tape held snug without compressing tissue.
