Overview
Four insurance-era formulas — Devine (1974), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983) and Hamwi (1964) — estimate a reference body weight from height and sex. All four share the same shape: a base weight at five feet plus a fixed increment per additional inch. Devine sets 50.0 kg for men and 45.5 kg for women, adding 2.3 kg per inch above 60 inches.

About
None of the four was derived as a health target. Devine was published to standardise drug dosing, particularly for medicines distributed in lean tissue rather than fat, and the others originated in life-insurance actuarial tables. The spread between them at a given height is typically several kilograms, which is itself a useful indication of how coarse the concept is.
The formulas take no account of frame size, muscle mass or body composition, and they extrapolate poorly below five feet, where the linear term contributes nothing. Body fat percentage and waist measurement describe health risk more directly.
