Overview
Three age systems coexist in East Asia, and they can disagree by two years for the same person on the same day. International age counts completed years and increments on the birthday. Korean counting age (세는나이) starts at one on the day of birth and advances every 1 January. Korean year age (연나이) is the bare calendar-year difference, with no birthday check at all.

About
South Korea adopted international age as its legal standard in June 2023, so statutes, contracts and medical records now use completed years unless a provision says otherwise. Counting age survives in conversation, where relative age governs speech level and forms of address, and year age remains the basis for conscription screening, school entry and the Youth Protection Act — rules administered by birth year rather than by birth date.
Vietnamese tuổi mụ and the traditional Japanese kazoedoshi follow the same ordinal logic as Korean counting age, which is why a Korean, a Vietnamese and a Japanese record of the same birth year can each report a different number.
